Team Tuesday's Iain sweeps Benton Road clean on opening day
A stage built for The Metronomes as Iain racks up Local Legend after Local Legend on the way into town.
Team Tuesday could not have asked for a better start to this Tour de Toon. Iain, racing for The Metronomes, opened his account with a quite remarkable haul of Local Legend crowns, eight of them in total, stamped across the length of the stage from Benton Road clean through to the Quayside. For a team built on consistency rather than fireworks, this was the platform they wanted.
The headline effort came on Benton and Chilly Road, the longest test of the day at 6:43, just 44 seconds off the best. It is the segment that decides the shape of the whole leg — long, straight, governed by a chain of traffic lights that can make or break a ride before it has properly begun — and today it went Iain’s way, green lights clicking through as he strung together the effort that set up everything that followed on Benton Road South and the short sprint beyond it.
Conditions were kind enough: a passing shower, 16.5°C, and a modest wind sitting behind or across for most of the stage, which will have helped rather than hindered on the exposed run in. No mention of the bridge whipping up anything fiercer today — a rare mercy for a crossing that usually finds a way to make itself felt. Gulls will have been about, as they always are, and the change in tyre noise onto Byker Bridge’s mixed surfaces will have marked the shift from road to river.
With the general classification only just opening, Iain sits exactly where he must: alone at the top, the only name on the board, and Team Tuesday’s colours flying from the very first stage. It is an early lead by default rather than design, but The Metronomes will take it — this Tour has a long way to run, and a rider who never goes off the back tends to be there at the end of it.
