Team Friday rolled out on what was billed as either the fastest leg of the Tour or a gentle roll home, and it landed somewhere in between — until Cemetery Drag threw up the moment of the day. Just two seconds off the personal best on that short, sharp sprint, it was the closest Iain has come to rewriting his own record book all Tour, and it was gone again in nineteen seconds flat, the segment barely long enough to draw breath in.

The rest of the ride told a steadier story. Benton and Chilly Road cost the most time on the day, nearly a minute and a half down on the last visit, and with it went any real hope of a blistering overall time. The long drag out past the traffic lights and shops never quite found its rhythm, and by the time the bridge came around Iain was managing the pace rather than chasing it.

Byker Bridge did what Byker Bridge always does, changing surface under the wheels as the cycle lane gave way to the pedestrian path, though with the wind sitting behind or across at a gentle 7 km/h there was none of the usual crosswind theatre. Gulls worked the river below as the Quayside came into view, cobbles underfoot as ever, the tide doing its own quiet business beside the Tyne Bridge.

In the general classification, Team Wednesday remain out in front at 25.57 km/h, still setting the standard the rest of the week is chasing. Team Friday sit third, their average nudged only slightly by today’s efforts, comfortably clear of Team Thursday and Team Tuesday but with real ground to make up on the leaders. Nothing here reshuffles the podium, but Cemetery Drag proved Iain still has a sprint in his legs when it matters — even on a Friday built for rolling home.
