Team Weekend take the scenic route and somehow bag a Local Legend
Iain, guesting for Team Weekend, wandered off the usual map and still found something to celebrate on a slow, sunny breakaway.
Team Weekend don’t do commutes, they do adventures, and this one was a proper breakaway: off the usual roads entirely, unraced before on four separate segments, and utterly irrelevant to the general classification. That, of course, has never stopped Iain enjoying himself.
The headline moment came deep into the ride on the Wiltshire Gardens to Heaton Road blast, where a Local Legend was duly claimed. It’s the kind of quiet, unglamorous triumph that never makes the GC sheets but means everything to the man who banked it, a reward for repeated effort on a stretch most riders would never think twice about.
Elsewhere it was a day for firsts rather than fireworks. Feetham rise, Top bit, the Rising Sun Hill Climb and H’up & Down were all ridden for the very first time, each one logged into the record books without comparison, without pressure, without a rival time to chase. Progress, of a sort, even if the watch told a different story: this was the slowest leg of the Tour bar one, just 8.8 km/h, as a 21 km/h south-westerly breathed straight into Iain’s face under a full 24.6°C sun. Sunny it may have been, but there was no hiding from that wind.
No bridge today, no Quayside gulls, no cobbles - this was Team Weekend off-piste, exploring corners of the map the regular week never sees. It doesn’t count, but it still counts, if that makes sense to anyone who’s ever ridden a bike for the fun of it.
Back in the real Tour, Team Wednesday still lead outright at 26.2 km/h from a single dazzling leg, with Team Friday, Team Tuesday and Team Thursday stacked up behind. Nothing here changes any of that - Team Weekend ride for pleasure, not for points - but the guest team’s own private classification just got one Local Legend richer.
BreakawayThis leg was well off the usual route, so it is written up but left out of the general classification. A scenic Friday cannot buy the yellow jersey.
