Team Monday wander into a headwind and just keep wandering
A sunny morning turned sluggish as Iain, riding for Team Monday, drifted to the back of the pack on the road to Dovedale.
There was no disguising it: this was a stage where the legs simply weren’t there. Iain, racing for Team Monday, posted his slowest run in eleven attempts on Benton Road to Dovedale, a full 47% off his best time on that stretch. It’s the kind of number that tells its own story — not a disaster, just a day when the rhythm never arrived, the sort of ride where every pedal stroke seems to be pushing through treacle rather than tarmac.
Things didn’t improve heading towards the bridge. Up to CJ’s, the short sharp climb that usually rewards a bit of punch, saw Iain’s slowest run in ten attempts, a whopping 96% off the best. Whatever spark had been missing on Benton Road was still missing here, and the climb — brief as it is — must have felt like it does on the worst days, honest about its gradient and unforgiving about the legs on offer.
Conditions were pleasant enough on paper: sunny skies, 15.1°C, with only a modest 7 km/h headwind to lean into. But a headwind is a headwind, and on a day when nothing was clicking, even a gentle breeze off the Tyne would have felt like resistance training. There was some consolation on the bridge crossing itself, where the tyre noise changed underfoot as ever, city opening up to the right and the drop into the trees on the left — small pleasures on an otherwise flat display.
The damage is done in the general classification. Team Friday remain out in front at 24.35 km/h, untroubled by today’s events, with Team Tuesday and Team Wednesday still snapping at their wheels. Team Monday sit rooted to fifth, now 160 seconds per 10 km off the pace across three legs. Optimism is one thing; today’s ride was a reminder that the Tour rewards legs, not intentions.
