Team Tuesday grind to a standstill, slip off the podium
A day meant for tailwinds turned into Iain's slowest Quayside dash on record, and the Metronomes paid for it in the standings.
There was no disguising it: Iain, racing for Team Tuesday, delivered the slowest run of his eleven attempts at Central Heatin’, a full 72 per cent off his best there. For a rider whose whole reputation is built on metronomic sameness, this was the day the metronome stopped ticking properly, and the numbers on the road spoke plainly of legs that simply weren’t playing along.
The wind, at least, should have been a help — a 22 km/h westerly sitting behind or across for most of the route, under dry skies and a mild 16°C. It rarely is that simple on this course, and today it wasn’t enough to paper over the cracks. Central Heatin’ set the tone early through Heaton’s cars and buses, and things never quite recovered.
By the time Iain reached the Quayside, with the Tyne Bridge looming and the gulls doing what gulls do above the cobbled edges, the damage was already compounding. The Quay TT came in as his slowest of fourteen attempts, a startling 146 per cent off the best — comfortably the day’s low point, and the one that will be remembered longest. Whatever tide was doing its business on the river below, Iain’s legs were doing something considerably worse.
The upshot on general classification is the story of the day. Team Tuesday, so long a fixture of the top two, have been shuffled down to third, overtaken by Team Wednesday’s climb into second place. Team Friday remain untouched at the summit, serene while the chasing pack rearranges itself beneath them. For the Metronomes, a name built on consistency now carries an uncomfortable footnote — even metronomes can run slow.
