Team Wednesday storm home at time-trial pace, Local Legend in the bag

Team Wednesday came out swinging on the ride home, and it did not let up. Iain’s 25.2 km/h average is the fastest return leg anyone has managed in this Tour, a time-trial effort from the very first turn of the pedals, and it set the tone for everything that followed.

It mattered because it proved the pace was no fluke: this was a rider repeatedly strong on the climbs, not just lucky once.

There was late drama too, with Iain just 1 second off his personal best on the Byker Bridge Sprint, the deck over the Ouseburn valley doing its usual trick of a proper crosswind, though today’s westerly breeze sat behind or across the rider rather than against him, in dry and mild conditions. Byker Bridge’s tyre note changed twice underneath him as he crossed, and he barely broke stride.

Up Gibson Street the story was mixed, honest to that climb’s reputation as the one that’s over in a minute and felt for ten, but the flatter, faster sections that followed - Shields Road, Benton Road, Hedley Hammer - all held firm at serious pace. This was a rider who found his rhythm and refused to lose it.

In the general classification, Team Wednesday move up to second, now just 58 seconds per 10 km behind a Team Friday side that still leads the Tour. It is the kind of ride that puts real pressure on the top of the table, and after a difficult week for Team Wednesday at the Tyne, this is exactly the response the Puncheurs needed.
