Team Friday time-trial into the sunset — and the yellow jersey to boot
Iain rides for Team Friday like a man with somewhere better to be, and the clock agrees with him all the way to the Quayside.
Team Friday do not do gentle rolls home, not this week. Iain went off the front from the off and never let up, posting the fastest leg of the entire Tour at 25.7 km/h — proper time-trial pace, the sort of number that makes the rest of the week look like a warm-up.
The defining effort came right at the end, on The Quay TT: 1:35, a full 20 seconds up on his last visit and only 25 seconds off the best he has ever managed there. Coming after everything Benton Road and the bridge had already asked of his legs, holding that kind of pace to the very last segment is what separates a leg from a statement. It is the kind of finish that wins Tours, not just stages.
The conditions were no gift either — overcast skies, 13.6 degrees, and a westerly breeze that turned into a proper headwind for 17 km/h of resistance the whole way. None of it mattered. Down on the Quayside the gulls wheeled overhead and the tide did whatever the tide does, indifferent to a man setting the fastest split of the fortnight beneath the stacked bridges and the Law Courts.
And now the numbers that matter most: Team Friday sit top of the General Classification, at 24.8 km/h across three legs, and this ride only tightens their grip. Team Wednesday remain second at 23.43 km/h, 85 seconds down per 10 km, with Team Tuesday, Team Monday and Team Thursday strung out behind. For a team built on Friday afternoons and the promise of the weekend, this was no gentle roll — it was a declaration. The Opportunists, it turns out, know exactly how to seize a chance when the legs are willing.
