Team Monday climb back into the top three, optimism intact

Third place. For Team Monday, that single fact is worth more than any split time from today’s ride out. Riding at 22.74 km/h across the leg, Iain has hauled his team back into the top three of the Tour for the first time since Stage 6, and it is his fastest ride out of the three attempted this campaign — proof, perhaps, that fresh legs and full intentions count for something after all.

The gap tells the real story. Team Wednesday, sat above them, led by 61 seconds per 10 km before this ride; now it is down to 47. That is a serious dent in a single outing, and it is exactly the sort of ground that turns a mid-table Tour into a genuine scrap. Team Tuesday, meanwhile, have been nudged down to fourth, a reminder that places in this Tour are won and lost by fractions rather than gulfs.

Conditions played their part without stealing the show — dry skies and a mild 12°C, nothing to trouble the legs or the line. Out along the route, Chillingham Road offered its usual soundtrack of coffee and Metro trains, a small, familiar comfort on a ride otherwise defined by numbers on a page rather than sights on the road.

Up at the summit of the general classification, Team Friday remain untouchable, 15 stages unbeaten and leading Team Wednesday by 102 seconds per 10 km, a margin that dwarfs anything happening beneath them. But down among the chasers, Team Monday’s rise matters. The Optimists, true to their name, have gone from also-rans to genuine contenders for the podium places, and if today’s pace is anything to repeat, Team Wednesday will feel the breath on their neck long before this Tour reaches its final week.
