Two slowest-ever runs back to back on the same stretch is not a coincidence; it is a rider running out of road and out of legs at the same moment.

Elsewhere there were flickers of the old puncheur spirit — Gibson Street and its variants all came in tidy, if unspectacular, and the Byker Bridge sprint held roughly steady. The bridge itself offered nothing but sunshine and calm for once, 19.3°C and not a breath of bother off the water, which made the slump on Benton Road all the harder to explain away on conditions.

Because the stage does not count, the general classification does not move: Team Friday still lead, 28 stages and counting, with Team Wednesday holding second at 23.07 km/h, just ahead of Team Thursday breathing down their neck in third. The duel with Thursday remains the shape of this Tour for the defending champions, and a day like this — soft in the legs, off the record books — will not settle it either way. But turning up to Benton Road and finding nothing there is not the form Team Wednesday will want to carry into the next reckoning.
