There was no easing into this one. Iain, racing for Team Wednesday, went off the line like the clock itself was chasing him, and by the finish the numbers told the story better than any commentator could: 23.7 km/h average, the fastest leg of the entire Tour so far. This was time-trial pace from the gun, and it never let up.

The defining moment came on Cemetery Drag, a sprint segment barely sixteen seconds long, where Iain came within a single second of his personal best. It is exactly the kind of short, brutal effort that suits Team Wednesday’s puncheur instincts — quick, explosive, over before the legs have time to complain. That it came mid-ride, with plenty of effort already banked, only made it more impressive.

Not everything went to script. Querido Crunch proved a rare stumble, the slowest of eight attempts on that stretch and a full eight percent off the best — proof, perhaps, that even a ride this ferocious has its limits, or that the legs were starting to feel the earlier efforts. Along the way, the bridge crossing brought its usual character, a westerly breeze pushing at his back or across him depending on the moment, tyres changing note as they hit the deck.

The Quayside, when it came, offered its familiar theatre — gulls overhead, the Tyne Bridge looming, the river doing whatever the tide fancied — but Iain barely had time to notice, riding it as the final flourish of a genuinely rapid finish.

And what a finish it proves for the general classification. Team Wednesday vaults straight to the top on debut, 23.7 km/h the benchmark now to beat. Team Tuesday, so recently celebrating a stolen yellow jersey, tumble to second, their 50 seconds per 10 km deficit suddenly very real. Team Monday slip to third. One leg in, and Team Wednesday have announced themselves as the team to catch.
