Team Wednesday were already sat atop the general classification, and instead of easing off, Iain went and delivered the fastest return leg of the entire Tour, 23.7 km/h from start to finish, with a tailwind on his back and a point to prove nobody actually asked him to prove.

The headline act came on Byker to Four Lane Ends, where Iain smashed out a personal best of 7:24, more than a minute quicker than his last visit. This is not a short, punchy segment where a good day can be papered over by adrenaline — it’s a long, honest slog through the meat of the return leg, and shaving 65 seconds off it in one sitting speaks to legs, engine, and a following wind that for once did exactly what it was supposed to. Add in second-best-ever efforts on blackbull, Tyneview - Whitley Park, and Canny taily!, and you have a rider stringing together the sort of consistent quality that simply does not happen by accident.

Gibson Street, as ever, had its say early doors — the short, honest climb doing what it always does, extracting a toll on the legs before the legs had even warmed up. But it was the flat, open running further out that told the real story tonight, with the easterly breeze doing Iain a favour rather than the usual trick of turning against him at exactly the wrong moment. Gulls wheeled somewhere off toward the river as he pressed on, the low overcast doing nothing to slow him down.

The general classification now reads exactly as you’d expect: Team Wednesday out in front at 26.5 km/h across two legs, with Team Monday, Team Friday, Team Tuesday and Team Thursday trailing in that order. This was not a stage that shook up the order — it confirmed it. Team Wednesday didn’t just defend the jersey tonight. They reminded everyone why they’re wearing it.
