Team Thursday finally floor it, catch the whole Tour napping

Nobody saw this coming from Team Thursday. Billed all Tour as the diesel engine of the outfit — reliable, unspectacular, occasionally grim — Iain suddenly discovered a turn of pace that put every other leg of this Tour in the shade. A 27.4 km/h average is not a number this team is supposed to produce, and yet here it is, printed in black and white.

The story of the day was Benton and Chilly Road, six minutes of pure business that came in just one second off the all-time best and stands as the second-fastest ride ever seen on that stretch. Riding at genuine time-trial intensity from the first pedal stroke, Iain simply refused to let the effort drop, and it showed everywhere: Benton Blast went two seconds off the personal best in its own right, and the splits up and down Benton Road all tumbled in the same direction. This was not a fluke on one ramp — it was a rider committing to the whole route and holding the line.

The only sensory concession to a rare treat: this was one of those still, overcast days when the gulls carry half a mile inland, and today they’d have heard the tyres change note crossing onto Byker Bridge and off it again, business as usual even at this pace. Nothing dramatic from the weather — overcast, mild, a modest tailwind doing exactly enough to help without doing any of the work — this was all rider.

It does not change the top of the general classification. Team Wednesday, boosted by three legs of relentless efficiency, still lead the Tour at 25.57 km/h. But Team Thursday’s day will not go unnoticed by the chasing pack — a reminder that the diesel occasionally hides a turbo, and that nobody in this Tour can afford to write off a Thursday.
