Team Friday roll into town and almost nick a PB on a lamppost
Iain, chasing the weekend under sunny Newcastle skies, comes within a whisker of history on Cemetery Drag.
There are days when the Tour de Toon delivers fireworks, and there are days when it delivers Team Friday, ambling out under blue skies with the air of a man who has already mentally clocked off. Iain, racing today for Team Friday, The Opportunists, produced exactly the kind of ride the jersey demands: unhurried, unbothered, and yet somehow, right in the middle of it all, nearly brilliant.
That near-brilliance came on Cemetery Drag, all twenty seconds of it, where Iain finished just one second shy of his personal best and five seconds off the all-time mark. It’s a scrap of a segment, over before it’s begun, but it was the one moment all stage where the legs remembered they were supposed to be racing. Everywhere else, the story was a gentle surrender: Benton Road and its neighbours bled minutes rather than seconds off the best times, the sort of numbers that only Team Friday could file with a shrug and a smile.
The conditions played their part, sunny and mild at 14.9°C, with a modest headwind for company that never quite got the chance to matter given the pace on offer. Out on Byker Bridge the wind did what it always does there, unsheltered and needling, but nothing here was punished for it. Down on the Quayside, gulls wheeled over a Tour that, for Iain today, was less about the clock and more about getting home for the weekend in one piece.
In the general classification, none of this troubles the leaders. Team Wednesday still sit top at 26.2 km/h from their single explosive leg, with Team Tuesday and Team Thursday scrapping for the minor placings behind. Team Friday’s contribution today does nothing to disturb that order, but nobody expected it to. This was never a stage for glory. It was a stage for surviving the week with a smile, one nearly-perfect sprint and a lot of sunshine to show for it.
