Team Thursday's Iain misses Gibson Street glory by a single second

Riding for Team Thursday on the way home, Iain came within a second of his best up Gibson Street and kept the Tour honest.

There are heartbreaks and there are heartbreaks, and this one was measured in a single tick of the clock. Iain, riding home for Team Thursday, threw everything he had at Gibson St Climb and came up 1 second short of his personal best — close enough to taste it, not close enough to have it. That is the cruelty of this Tour in miniature: a whole leg’s effort, decided by a heartbeat.

Gibson Street is the one climb in this Tour that does not care how tired you are, and Iain arrived at its foot plenty tired. It is short, it is steep, and it is honest about itself, and today it very nearly gave up a new best time. The lights partway up did not intervene either way — it simply came down to legs, and the legs almost had it. Seventeen seconds off the outright best across the segment overall, but that 1-second gap to his own recent form is the number that will nag at him tonight.

Elsewhere the story was more workmanlike than heroic — Shields Road and the Coach Lane stretches all came in well down on the best times, the diesel engine ticking over rather than roaring, which is rather the point of Team Thursday. Overcast skies at 16.3°C and a wind sitting behind or across did him no harm at all; conditions asked nothing extra of him, and he still found enough to nearly rewrite Gibson Street. The tyre note changing on and off Byker Bridge, gulls drifting in off the river, the buses shuffling along Shields Road — all present and correct, all background to a rider working through fatigue rather than against weather.

In the general classification, Team Wednesday still leads the Tour at 26.2 km/h, with Team Thursday’s 24.4 km/h keeping them second and within touching distance, 101 seconds per 10 km down. Team Tuesday sit third. Nothing has changed at the top, but Team Thursday have served notice: stubborn, grinding, and one second away from something special.
