Team Thursday are back among the leaders for the first time since the opening week, and this ride out is why. It was, by the numbers, his fastest ride of the Tour so far, and it landed at exactly the moment his general classification needed it.

The headline splits came early and often on Benton Road, where the long, gently falling drag rewarded the effort with times well up on his last visit and, crucially, without the traffic-light pileups that usually undo this stretch. From there the legs held through Heaton and onto the bridge, where the crossing itself came in quicker than before despite the pedestrian path underfoot demanding its usual care. Under clear skies and a crisp 8.7°C, there was none of the drama that has undone other teams this week, just a steady, unglamorous accumulation of seconds saved.

The sensory detail of the day belonged to the coffee smell drifting along Chillingham Road as the wheels rolled through, a small mercy on a ride otherwise defined by concentration rather than scenery. Nothing about the run suggested spectacle. Everything about the clock suggested progress.

And progress is now the story. Team Thursday sit third in the general classification, their best position since week one, having closed to within 25 seconds per 10 km of Team Wednesday above them, down from 63 before this ride. Team Friday remain out in front, unmoved after 21 stages at the top, still 103 seconds per 10 km clear of Team Wednesday. The gap at the summit looks as settled as ever, but underneath it, for the first time in weeks, something is actually shifting.
